Meningococcal Vaccination Algorithm

An easy-to-reference guide for healthcare providers of current ACIP meningococcal vaccination recommendations

Recent studies have shown that the current ACIP recommendations for meningitis vaccinations are not always fully understood or applied consistently by healthcare providers. For that reason, the Meningitis B Action Project has developed an easy-to-reference algorithm to facilitate meningococcal vaccination in clinical practice.

This resource was developed by the Meningitis B Action Project. All information included has been reviewed by the Meningitis B Action Project medical council.

Current ACIP Recommendations for Meningococcal Vaccination

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for meningococcal vaccination are:

MenACWY: All 11-12-year-olds should receive a meningococcal conjugate vaccine, followed by a booster dose at 16.

MenB: Healthy adolescents and young adults 16 through 23 years of age may also receive a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine. If given, the preferred age is 16 through 18 years.1 For these individuals, MenB vaccination decisions should be made through shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) informed by discussions among the healthcare provider, patient, and/or parent or guardian.

CDC also recommends meningococcal vaccination for other children and adults who are at increased risk for meningococcal meningitis.

A digital version of the algorithm is currently under development.
